ERBIL, Iraqi Kurdistan -- At the end of a vote of confidence for the minister of the interior’s post, a fight of water bottles broke out among the members of parliament.
Today the parliament in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region met to listen to the testimonies of Karim Sinjari, the minister of the interior at the KRG about the February protests in Sulaimani.
At the end of the session all MPs from the Kurdistani List that is made of the two ruling parties of PUK and KDP cast their vote of confidence in favor of Sinjari and at that moment Peshawa Tofiq, MP from the Gorran movement threw his water bottle at the speaker of parliament.
In response a number of MPs from the majority Kurdistani List threw a barrage of water bottles at MP Tofiq.
Kardo Muhammed, head of the Gorran MPs described the incident inside the parliament today as unusual and he condemned it.
After the majority of MPs voted for minister Sinjari to remain in his post, the opposition MPs started beating their desks in protest and as a result a war of words broke out between both sides.
In the midst of the noise MP Peshawa Tofiq threw his water bottle at the speaker of parliament and immediately the MPs from the Kurdistani List retaliated by throwing their bottles at MP Tofiq.
In the meantime the TV screen of the journalists’ hall was switched off while all the MPs remained behind closed doors.
Kwestan Muhammed, MP from the Gorran movement dismissed her fellow MP’s act as unacceptable while she condemned the way the other MPs attacked Tofiq in that manner with so many water bottles.
“Speaker of parliament himself should have taken position and the MPs shouldn’t have appointed themselves his protectors.” she said.
Awaz Abdulwahid, MP from the Kurdistani List defended the reaction of her fellow MPs and said that they consider themselves protectors of the parliament and its speaker.
“Any time they are attacked, we will protect them.” she said.
Earlier in the session, Minister of the Interior Karim Sinjari defended his position of sending special Zeravani forces to Sulaimani on the first day of protests in February. He also said that if demonstrations are held without permission, the security forces won’t be able to guarantee protesters’ safety.  http://www.rudaw.net/english/kurds/3607.html
