Iraq: Railway staff demand salary increase or dissolution of company

Baghdad, April 18 (AKnews) - A number of the railway company staff demanded on Sunday the Iraqi Ministry of Transport to raise their salaries like the other employees in other government ministries or dissolve the company if it is unable to meet their financial needs.

Demonstration in baghdadThe railway company has witnessed a demonstration by the employees of the company, which ended this afternoon demanding raising their salaries.

The employee , Ayad Neema told AKnews that the Ministry of Transport has to review the salary scale on the staff of the railway company .
"The staff of the railway company were paid half of what other employees take in the Oil Ministry companies, which is not acceptable in the logic of the salary scale."

The employee, Amer Shaheen said that "The director of the company did not open his door for us to talk about the salaries and often sends representatives who have nothing to do with this issue."

The Director of the railway media, Jawad Khersan answered the demands of the demonstrators as saying that "those who demonstrated today, there was a mistake in the salaries of those demanding higher salaries as it have been cut and everything were corrected in the previous salaries scale."

"The General Company of Railway will take the salaries of staff on a monthly basis by the government banks and there is no delay in it."



The public railway company announced in 20 of last February that the Finance Ministry canceled its decision not to distribute salaries to the staff of the company.

Iraq seeks to build a system of integrated transport system with the regional countries through the dry channel that links the Mediterranean Sea, the Persian Gulf and East Asian countries; it is the biggest transfer channel in the world.
The former Iraqi government announced last April including Iraq within the countries that shares the dry channel.

The former Transport Minister , Amir Abdul-Jabbar had warned when handing over the ministry to the new minister , Hadi al-Amiri from the implementation of railway project between Iraq and neighboring countries, called the (dry channel) as it will reduce the effectiveness of Iraqi ports and rely on road transport only.
