Moussa: underway consultations may postpone Baghdad summit

Cairo, April 18 (AKnews) – The Secretary -General of the Arab League said on Monday, that the Arab summit might be postponed in light of the consultations carried out with the Arab foreign ministers to hold an emergency meeting about the postponement of the Arab summit which was scheduled to be held in Baghdad on 11 and 12 of next month .

Arab LeagueAmro Moussa, secretary general of the Arab League said in a press statement attended by AKnews that there are underway consultations to agree to address the Arab summit issue," and expressed his belief that it might be delayed, and there will be a meeting of Arab foreign ministers to discuss the Arab summit in the future.

Over the proposed nominations for the secretary general of the Arab League post after the nomination of Qatar to , Abdul-Rahman al-Attiya former secretary general of the Gulf Cooperation Council, and Egypt's nomination to Dr. Mustafa Al Faqi, Vice President of the Arab Parliament, Moussa said "as long as there is more than one candidate, so that will be under consideration in the next Meeting of Foreign Ministers to be held in order to resolve the summit issue. "

Over how to deal with the nomination of the Secretary-General issue in the light of prospects for the summit postponement, Moussa said that "there must be a consensus in this regard, because in accordance with the Arab League Charter, the Arab summit appoints the Secretary-General of the League and this is the basis and the subject of legal research.

Iraq has hosted the Arab summit twice in 1978 in which it was decided to boycott the companies and institutions operating in Egypt that deal directly with Israel and disapproved Camp David agreement, as well as the convening a summit in 1990, which witnessed severe tensions between Iraq , Kuwait and the UAE that started the first Gulf War.
