Baghdad, A spokesman in the Iraqi government announced on Thursday that Baghdad and Washington have agreed on the activation of the Strategic Framework Agreement signed between the two sides in 2008 which includes the military withdrawal from Iraq by the end of this year.
The Vice President Joseph Biden, arrived late last night in Baghdad on the first visit of a U.S. official to Iraq after the formation of the new government.

Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh, said in a press conference held in Baghdad that the two sides are ready to set a date for the beginning of the High Joint Committee meetings.

“The activation of the Agreement will help in building bilateral relations between the relevant Iraqi ministries and their U.S. counterparts,” Dabbagh said.

Dabbagh went on to say that the Iraqi government appreciated the U.S. Vice president’s role in lifting the UN sanctions imposed on Iraq at a Security Council meeting recently.

"Biden expressed his satisfaction with the formation of the government,” he said, adding that the U.S. Vice president was “impressed” by Iraq’s “opening to the international community”.

Since the formation of the new Iraqi government, Baghdad has hosted a number of international leaders, including the Syrian and Iranian foreign ministers; the Jordanian and Kuwait prime ministers and the secretary general of the Arab league.
