Talabani confirms government’s commitment to combat corruption...
Najaf, The Iraqi President Jalal Talabani reiterated Friday the new Iraqi government will work earnestly to eliminate all manifestations of administrative corruption in state facilities, provide better services to citizens, and protect the minorities.

The president arrived in Najaf this morning and after visiting the shrine of Imam Ali, met with the religious authority Grand Ali al-Sistani in the Shia city.

After the 30 minute-gather, at a press conference held near Sistani's house, Talabani commended the role of Sistani in calling for unity, integrity, combating corruption and provision of services for the citizens.

"We assured him that the Iraqi government is serious about achieving these ends,” Talabani stated.

In the meeting both leaders also reiterated the need to protect the Christians and protect the “resistance against the seditions which aim at dividing the sons of Iraq,” according to Talabani.

Recently Christians were targeted across Iraq, with hundreds of them killed and wounded, and many displaced for fear of their lives. Sistani condemned the attacks against Christians and underlined all Iraqis are brothers and don't accept injustice.

Talabani also stated the he has discussed with Sistani the injustice against the Feyli Kurds because first they are Kurds and second they are Shias. The religious authority also assured the Iraqi president that he always supports the oppressed, including the Faylis.

Talabani expressed his pleasure over the meeting and described Najaf "the center of culture and religion and brotherhood."

After the press conference, the Iraqi President Talabani headed to the second greatest religious authority in Najaf, Mohammed Said al-Hakim and he is expected to meet with the head of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI) Ammar al-Hakim by noon today.
A source ruled out any meeting between President Talabani and the leader of Sadrist Current Muqtada al-Sadr. Recently, Sadr came back to Iraq after four years of self-imposed exile in Iran.
