200 m. disappears from Maliki’s treasury

Saturday, 12 March 2011
Baghdad, INN- Embattled Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki, once gain, finds himself face to face with a financial scandal with disappearance of large amount of money from his government’s treasury.
Well-informed political sources in Baghdad said $200 million dollars have disappeared from Maliki’s office just to be added to his government’s financial corruption .
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the sources said the money, disappeared last year, is part of the funds allocated for the national reconcilia tion process, a fragile initiative launched by Maliki during his first term of office.
This is not the first time, money is lost from Maliki’s private office run by his closest aides, said the sources noting that the Prime Minister and his team never gave a clear and convincing explanation to the disappearance of another $40 million from the Iraqi money.
Political observers draw a link between this continuous loss of public money and the obscene wealth of Maliki’s closest aides particularly his son Ahmed who, most recently, completed a deal to purchase highly expensive armored vehicles to be used for protecting Maliki’s entourage , not to mention the huge business projects carried out by Ahmed al-Maliki in and outside Iraq.
