Fisk Post: OD 3/6/11 (AS PROMISED- POLL TAKEN ON THE GROUND-1ST HAND ACCOUNT THROUGH THE EYES OF THE COMMON IRAQI CITIZENS)

March 6th, 2011 02:59 pm

Sorry to say that at this point I had to classify this infomation under rumor do to the sensitivity of the information and how it was obtained… I usually copy/paste straight from Facebook and at this time I can not and will not reveal the name of the source. This information came via my personal email.
50 Iraqi citizens (on the streets) were polled on the following questions as to take their temperature (mood) on the ground… now mind you that this could only be done on a radius of approx 40 miles from the compound that my source is stationed and citizens were hand picked by my source and he polled them based on a variety of professions and also polled based on joblessness, living conditions, the employed,,, etc.
Questions posed were these with a break down on percentages of approval rates out of 50 citizens polled tied in with a few ot their shared comments.
Here’s the mood or temperature on the ground as of this pass week.
1) Services- How are your day to day living conditions based on goods and services you recieve?
Water–Many complained of course… There’s no sutable drinking water that comes out of the ground (their words) and anytime they need drinking water they mainly have to boil it first. They have fire pits just outside their homes used to constantly boil their water… than they complain they have to let it cool of course and when asked about putting ice in the water to cool it they say the ice is dirty and don’t trust what they even get from the merchants and it makes them sick… at least a half a dozen Iraqi citizens explained this exact method.
Electricity- On/Off they all say… most of the time it comes on at the same time each day so they can rely on certain times of the day they can cook and read etc… most of them wash their clothes by hand. The more “better off citizens” have gas powered generators that have a service come around and fill their generators up with fuel.
MANY REFERENCED THAT THIS BIG ELECTRIC COMPANY IS GOING TO BE COMING IN TO PROVIDE JOBS AND GOOD ELECTRICITY… THEY CALL IT THE BIG “G” COMPANY…. THIS MEANS OF COURSE GENERAL ELECTRIC AND THEY ARE ALL EXCITED ABOUT IT.
While only 14% of the citizens claimed that the conditions they are living in were acceptable more than 60% felt they things were about to change and soon and they kept bringing up “Big G.”
2) Food Rations- Most people are living hand to mouth, week to week… the ration cards are being distributed and although there are more of them, the amounts are said to be alot less. The more family members (many have taken in orphaned children by the war) or children they have then the more food cards they recieve into their own homes and it’s like they claim these orphaned children as their own dependents. They say they actually have to have an address that they can put on the forms so they too can eat. Without jobs they eat very little and the new “programs” aren’t enough they all say…They just want jobs so they can take care of their families.
74% are saying they have enough food while the smaller majority have to pan handle or beg. Many neighbors help eachother.
3) Currency situation- We posed questions about the currency being used and what they have heard about the value rising as well as the denominations actually being used.
The census is that a lot of the larger denominations aren’t seen or used any more… it’s like they dissappeared but and they say only a small amounts are still around.. They claim their money is not worth anything and that they are being told that it’s going to be worth much more…
AN ASTONISHING 88% OF THE CITIZENS POLLED BELIEVE AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THEIR MONEY IS GOING TO BE WORTH MORE AND VERY SOON,,LIKE ANY DAY THEY KEPT ON SAYING … GET THIS!!!!!– MOST OF THEM SAY IT WILL BE WORTH MORE THAN THE KUWAITI DINAR..
Many say they are trying to save for the “big day” when their money will be worth that much but only 3% of them said that they are actually able to save because they live very frugally as it already is and as they very well put it.
However, almost all of them don’t trust the banking system and feel better by holding on to the cash they have.
4) Government approval- simply put- only 36% approve 35 % disapprove and the remainder 29% are still undecided in the hope that things will just get better.
Comments in general:
*We traded dictator for dictator…
*The new government don’t care about us.
*The Americans and big businesses are going to help get things going.
*They are afraid that the Taliban is going to come back due to lack of organization of the “New Government” and the US saying they are going to leave.
*They want change now and if it doesn’t happen soon than they feel they were better off before the war.
*We’re all going to be rich some day and we were promised.
So out of these overall comments we conclude that there is much dissention but still plenty of hope as well as they seem very scared for the most part.
5) Uprisings and demonstrations.
They all love the fact that they can be heard but are they being heard is their question????
Most of them stood up and boasted at the fact that they could speak without being punished as they put it. They like the fact that they have seen change in other countries and that they think they can put pressure on the government
More than 95% said they like this form of government and for THE VERY REASON AND THAT “THEY ARE ALLOWED TO VOICE THEIR FEELINGS THIS TIME AROUND”
Most of them stated that they wish the demonstrations were a bit more peaceful and that less people would have gotten hurt as they stated sympathy and concern for the reporters that we beaten and arrested by trying to get information out to the rest of the world on how the citizens are actually feeling at this moment and time.
6) Jobs- When asked where all the jobs are and how they feel about their employment situation this is what they had to say..
22% said they can make do with the jobs they have and most of these were food merchants thriving off the meak as well as the others that work in small industry and low level government and banking officials.
As for the rest of them …they take on very odd jobs or search around most of the day trying to figure out what to do next.
One paricular citizen stood out and was yelling that the Americans bombed his place of work and was very upset that the company didn’t have the resources or supplies to rebuild the infrastructure of the clothes factory for which he worked at for 21yrs.
They are all screaming that they just want to go back to work or work more and the jobs they have don’t pay much because their economy can’t handle more good jobs they are saying. They want to rebuild their war stricken country and they don’t understand what is taking so long. Material for rebuilding structures damaged by the war are of short supply.
Here’s the best I could find out from another source of mine (boots on the ground) in Iraq…
I really wish to personally and publically thank him and I hope you all appreciate the effort he put into this…
