In the original movie, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”, Veruca Salt, the daughter of the nut magnet in England wanted one of Willy’s Geese that laid golden eggs! She wanted it and she wanted it NOW! What if there really was something like a goose that laid Golden Eggs? Would you want it?
In the late 80’s, a large investment firm placed a full page ad in the Wall Street Journal that pictured, a Mercedes, a Cruise Ship, a Rolex, and a few other luxury items. The Caption read, “The IRS thinks these are Life Insurance!”
What do you think that was all about? At the time, there was a Life Insurance Product called Single Premium Whole Life that would allow you to dump hundreds of thousands of dollars into it and begin to immediately withdraw Income, TAX-FREE, out of it to spend on whatever you desired; Cars, Trips, Jewelry, etc.
In my opinion, because of the high profile marketing of this product in such a manner by this investment firm, Congress got involved to take away it’s perceived “Abuse” by the wealthy! The TAMRA legislation was enacted (Technical and Miscellaneous Revenue Act of 1988) which made this type of policy to be treated as a Modified Endowment Contract with the tax treatment similar to that of an Annuity instead of the tax benefits of Life Insurance, namely, Tax-Deferred Accumulation, Tax-Free Income through Withdrawals and Loans, and the Income Tax-Free Distribution at death to the heirs or estate.
This product is still being sold today but not for the Tax-Free Income it once provided. It’s used as a wealth transfer product. Instead, because of the TAMRA legislation, other strategies have been developed to accomplish the same results: TAX-FREE INCOME derived from a Life Insurance contract.
