Iraq Parliament set to approve law granting PM authority to dismiss incompetent ministers ...

Baghdad, A National Coalition (NC) deputy said on Wednesday that parliament is set to pass a law that grants the Prime Minister the right to dismiss any minister who fails to perform his/her duties.

Salman al-Moussawi told AKnews that the majority of parliamentary blocs have decided to approve the request of PM Nouri al-Maliki if it was regulated within a law.

"The dismissal of incompetent ministers must be done on legal basis and following the 100-day deadline specified by Maliki to assess the performance of each minister and official in the government," Moussawi said.

On Sunday Maliki gave his ministers a 100-day ultimatum to establish reforms or face dismissal amid nation-wide public protests against administrative corruption and poor public services.

In an official statement Maliki warned his cabinet to shape-up or “face changes”.

“The prime minister is not the only person responsible for the failure to implement projects, all officials in the state are responsible for that,” Moussawi said.

Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis took to the streets on Friday protesting against shortages of electricity, the failure of the food rationing system and high unemployment, calling for the resignation of some provincial officials.

Friday’s nation-wide rallies became less peaceful in several cities, notably in Mosul where protestors set fire to the Nineveh provincial government headquarters and in Basra where the governorate was stormed. Violent clashes between security forces and the public were also reported in Baghdad, Kirkuk and Salahadin.
