Leader refutes reports of positioning late parliament

Erbil, March 22 (AKnews)- A leader from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) said Tuesday Jawahr Namiq Salim died not of position but ailment.
jaafar ibrahimSalim, the first Kurdistan parliament speaker and the former KDP politburo secretary died in Stockholm Monday night at the age of 65. Following his death, some Kurdish media reported he was poisoned.
Jaafar Ibrahim, a KDP politburo member described all the reports claiming Salim was poisoned “sheer baseless rumors.” Speaking to AKnews he expected the family of the deceased will refute the reports soon.
The leader stressed the KDP “deeply regrets his death.”
“Massoud Barzani in various ways assisted Salim to restore his health but unfortunately he passed away.”
Barzani, Kurdistan Region President, also leads the KDP.
Ibrahim described the parties claiming that the former speaker was poisoned as “liars unacquainted with settling the disputes in a civil manner, those who twist the reality.”
Salim was assigned as the first speaker for the Kurdistan Regional parliament in1992. He had grown apart form the KPD in the recent year, declaring himself an independent politician.
Some parties believe he was associated with the newly emerged opposition party, the Goran (Change) Movement, which is now at loggerheads with the KDP and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), two domineering parties in Kurdistan since 1991.
Kakamin Najjar, Ibrahim’s colleague in the politburo, believed the KDP is “beyond committing such an act especially against a leader as Salim who had an incessant struggle under the KDP for Kurdistan public.”
Najjar said though Salim had abandoned the party for a while, as old friends they met each other regularly.
Salim resided in Erbil till he passed away. It was only for treatment that he was in Stockholm, Najjar added.
